What is Culture Pop: Sound & Screen?
Imagine a world where you have direct access to the enlightened, er, tortured, uh, some kinda’ ramblings on music, movies, TV, books, writing and other arts and entertainment topics by longtime music and film journalist Philip Booth. Your dream is now a reality!
Who am I?
I’m just a simple Florida man, a longtime arts and entertainment writer and musician seeking to directly connect with folks who might be receptive to my thoughts on all the above topics, in a format not bound by the usual strictures of newspaper, magazine and web journalism.
Where have you seen me?
You mean, aside from the wanted posters at your local post office? You may know my work from Billboard, Variety, DownBeat, Jazziz, JazzTimes, Relix, Salon.com, CMJ New Music Monthly, Option, The Washington Post and other national outlets. I’ve also been published in Literature/Film Quarterly, The Journal of Popular Culture and The Journal of American Culture. My essay on the three film adaptations of Ernest Hemingway’s “The Old Man and the Sea” is a chapter in a 2022 “Critical Insights” volume published by Salem Press.
Or perhaps you’ve come across my byline in the late, great Tampa Tribune (where I was the pop music critic in days of yore), Tampa Bay Times/St. Petersburg Times, Orlando Weekly, Sarasota Herald-Tribune, Las Vegas CityLife, Philadelphia City Paper, Detroit Metro Times or Folio Weekly, among other daily and weekly newspapers in Florida and beyond. I’ve also written a few things for Rolling Stone, Spin, the Boston Globe and Miami New Times.
Additionally, you may have seen me on stage, playing bass guitar and double bass around Florida with Acme Jazz Garage, Blues Walk, Swan City Jazz Project, Ghetto Love Sugar, Trio Vibe, Greenwich Blue and other jazz, blues, jamband and rock outfits.
What else should you know?
I’m a longstanding member of the Florida Film Critics Circle, Jazz Journalists Association and Hemingway Society, and I’ve served as a juror for the Gasparilla International Film Festival.
Back when, I scored a bunch of awards from the Florida Press Club and the Florida Society of Newspaper Editors, for work published in the Tampa Tribune, Lakeland Ledger and Florida Today newspapers.
I have an M.A. in English/creative writing from University of South Florida, where I taught some composition and film classes, and a B.A. in history from the University of Florida. I spent a semester in the grad cinema studies program at NYU.
My wife and I, based in Tampa, have two adult children.
